When in Doubt, just Rum! (Mauritian Rhum)

Alcohol does not seem to be the most suitable solution to problems, but your trip to Mauritius may prove otherwise! Mauritius is a relative newcomer to global rum markets. For centuries, colonial governments in Mauritius frowned on using sugar cane for rum, because refined sugar fetched much better profits. The historical progression of the rum industry in Mauritius is no less elevating than that of the Caribbean or of the South America. It was Mr. Pierre Charles Francois Harel who initially proposed the concept of local distillation of rum in Mauritius, in 1850. Thanks to him, Mauritius today proudly houses distilleries. Presently, the industrial rum represents about 90% of the world production of rum. Mauritius is one of the few countries that produce both industrial and agricultural rum!

Whether or not you are a rum connoisseur, you will love discovering the rum making process when visiting one of the many rum distilleries in Mauritius. A few of the ones you can visit are: St. Aubin, Rhumerie de Chamarel, and Labourdonnais. They all make excellent rums that you will want to bring back with you as souvenirs. During your visit, make sure to ask about the Mauritian tradition of rum arrangé, or flavored rum!

The process of making agricole rum requires distilling the juice as quickly as possible after it’s crushed out of the cane. Twelve kinds of sugar cane grow in Mauritius, but two are used for rum — yellow and red. The color refers to the stalk, only visible once the green leaves are stripped away. At the Rhumerie, everything is designed to showcase the process, to encourage visitors to watch rum being made and then to sample the results. The finished drink is smoother than the traditional molasses rum.

If you are to take those bottles home, we suggest you try the Chamarel’s Gold variety which is kept in French oak for 18 months, giving it a woody undertone. Another batch goes into American oak for a fruitier taste. Also, look out for Rhum Arrangé traditionnel. “Arrangé” refers to the infusion, often from macerated fruits like litchi or coconut, or other local produce like coffee, vanilla and spices. They create 21 different flavors, and for tourists worried about flying home with liquids, they also sell packets of dried fruit and Mauritian sugar, with instructions on how to infuse rum at home. Couldn’t get any better! And for the Coffee Lovers, it’s time to taste St. Aubin’s Coffee Rum, packed with intense flavor of Mauritian Coffee and ideal as a liqueur or an engaging aperitif, served on the rocks.

Cheers to the weekend, we drink to that!

Lord Ganesha comes to Paradise!

Come join the celebration as It’s Lord Ganesha’s birthday! Mauritius being a hub of cultural mélange, one would not exclude this auspicious Hindu festival. Most of them are familiar with Ganesha’s story, but for some of you who aren’t, here is how it goes: Hindus celebrate the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi or Vinayak Chaturthi, as a day on which lord Ganesha, the younger son of Lord Shiva and Parvati was born. The birthday of lord Ganesha is celebrated on the fourth day of the lunar month of August/September. Lord Ganesha is symbolized as the god of wisdom and the god who removes all the obstacles in path of its followers and thus he is also called “Vignaharta” meaning ‘remover of obstacles’.

You might also wonder as to why does Ganesh have an Elephant’s head? As usual, legends abound. It all began when Parvati, who is the consort of Lord Shiva, was having a bath. She rubbed some dust and oil from her body and created the shape of a boy and infused life into the shape and that is how Ganesha was born. Parvati told her son to guard the door when she was bathing. Lord Shiva came to visit and Ganesh would not let him in. How was Ganesh supposed to know Shiva was his father? So he fought with Shiva and Ganesha’s head was severed in the ensuing scuffle. As you can imagine Goddess Parvati was very upset. She asked Lord Shiva to bring her son back to life. Shiva sent his men to look for a head replacement for Ganesh. The brief was to bring the head of the first living creature they find facing North which is a direction associated with wisdom and the rest is history! But why would Shiva put an Elephant head on his Son? The elephant head symbolizes wisdom and knowledge. An elephant does not bypass obstacles, it removes them and walks ahead. Devotees believe that worshipping Ganesh will bring these qualities to them and remove their difficulties so they can achieve their goals. His big ears means Ganesh listens to the prayers of his devotees.

During the festival you will witness processions of devotees happily dancing and chanting on the roads, everyone around carrying colorful figurines of Lord Ganesh on small platforms with great enthusiasm. The sound of drums, cymbals and bells will undoubtedly put you in a trance! Such is the enthusiasm of this festival and not only that, it is scientifically stated that the vibrations of the chants used during Ganesh Festival, literally cleanse the mental tensions and other negativity in the body, which is why some people are lost into the musical orchestra formed by the drum beats and other instruments!

If you would like to be a part of the ceremony, you can visit the Tookay Temple in Savanne District or Grand Bassin ( Ganga Talao ) during Immersion day of the Idols! This year, the festival falls on the 25th of August, 2017.

Ganpati Bappa, Moryaa!!!

How Geolocalization works!

Okay fellas, we are now far away from the era where we used the doves as our messengers and eagles to navigate! Moving towards the age where everything is digitally influenced, our methods and day to day lives have been rather more convenient than what was in the past. This very reason has got us to introduce a new service through DiscoverTM Mobile App that has changed the way we travel for the better! For a traveler, their main concern is getting to know what locations to visit and discover the unseen and untold beauty of every place, besides having the Mobile phone at hand, not much seems to be of help in order to do so. Hence, DiscoverTM Mobile App has a little treat for you all – Presenting the ‘GEO LOCALIZED BEACONS’ for the very first time in Mauritius has immensely improved the traveler’s experience.

Technology does come with such fancy terms not knowing what it does sometimes! Let us guide you how it works – Geo Localized beacons or Geolocation In its simplest form, involves the generation of a set of geographic coordinates and is closely related to the use of positioning systems, but its usefulness is enhanced by the use of these coordinates to determine a meaningful location, such as a street address. For instance, not many travelers tend to have a sim card and often do not usually have access to WiFi in order to find address or contacts to certain places during their journey, which can be quiet frustrating, and sometimes ending up with a not so pleasant experience. In such situations, Geo beacons allow the user to locate any place near or far by using the information from cell towers to triangulate the approximate position.

So if you are left stranded without an internet connection, or a local sim card, or even WiFi signal, and you still have DiscoverTM Mobile App on your phone, just use it! The Geo Localized beacons are already incorporated in the app that help the traveler to scout through various activities, shopping places, restaurants or even healthcare and just locate them to your closest proximity and give you that much needed help! Even if you happen to pass by the touristic areas of Flic en Flac or GrandBaie and are not aware of certain happening places, you get a direct notification of places that have been registered on the app that are in the close proximity from your current position, and again all this works OFFLINE!

Everything has its Pros and Cons and so is the case with Technology. But DiscoverTM Mobile App has always strived to fascinate the travelers with the right kind of implementation and again, prioritizing the User experience in such scenarios.

What are you waiting for? Download the App now and experience the best of this Island Offline!
